Find out why a face-to-face Speaking  test is unbiased and what you should expect on test day. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5>On this page <\/h5>\n\n\n\n<ul><li><a>IELTS Speaking test format<\/a><\/li><li><a>Life Skills test format<\/a><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul><li><\/li><li><\/li><li><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>While\n English language tests with AI marking are often promoted as being \nunbiased, researchers from MIT have recently found that&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.technologyreview.com\/s\/612876\/this-is-how-ai-bias-really-happensand-why-its-so-hard-to-fix\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Artificial Intelligence (AI) can still be bias<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.technologyreview.com\/s\/612876\/this-is-how-ai-bias-really-happensand-why-its-so-hard-to-fix\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">ed<\/a>.&nbsp;So, what does it mean when an AI machine is testing your English language abilities?&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When  an AI machine is being trained through deep learning, bias can occur.  The machine learns from\u00a0the\u00a0data it is fed. If this data mostly contains  spoken samples from European candidates, then the AI machine will find  it harder to\u00a0recognise\u00a0spoken English from Indian, Chinese or even  native English speakers.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/speakinenglish.in\/\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"593\" height=\"230\" src=\"http:\/\/www.ecruitment.in\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/toefl-ICON.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-113\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.ecruitment.in\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/toefl-ICON.jpg 593w, https:\/\/www.ecruitment.in\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/toefl-ICON-300x116.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 593px) 85vw, 593px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The MIT research also found that bias \ncan be introduced in the data preparation stage \u2013 when algorithms are \nidentified within a language sequence or the areas the AI machine will \nneed to focus on to mark your English-speaking abilities. This may \naffect your score if you use local lingo, jokes or slang, or if you \npause for a period within the&nbsp;Speaking&nbsp;test.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Human examiners,&nbsp;on \nthe other hand,&nbsp;can understand different accents and tell the difference\n between a pause for thought and a pause of confusion. A human examiner \nhas been specially trained to consider the social context. They know and\n understand the appropriate use of words, sentence structures and the \nlike.&nbsp;And&nbsp;human examiners can easily prompt you if you get stuck at any \npoint within your&nbsp;Speaking&nbsp;test.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The\u00a0IELTS Speaking\u00a0test\u00a0is done  face-to-face with a real, human examiner. This way you can rest assured  that there won\u2019t be any AI machine bias when sitting your Speaking\u00a0test.
